The Pig Stand: One of the Oldest, BEST Places to Eat in San Antonio!
San Antonio is the only place other than New York City that I can safely say has some of the best dining spots in the country. That’s right, you heard me. And I regret NOTHING because it’s true! San Antonio is known for its bold spirit of curiosity and community and it easily reflects on local restaurants.
Today, I’d like to share one of my favorite restaurants in San Antonio--The Pig Stand! This long-running establishment has been a natural San Antonio staple for nearly a HUNDRED years. That’s right, you heard me. It’s been around since the ‘20s, famous for some mouth-watering food items including Texas toast, deep-fried onion rings, and the country-fried steak sandwich. But the most famous item on the menu, of course, is the Pig Sandwich, a delicious pork sandwich oozing with the most tantalizing and juiciest of flavors in the state. Take it from me--someone who doesn’t even LIKE pork--you gotta try it.
The Pig Stand has for a long time been one of my favorite places to eat in the San Antonio area. Mary Ann, the current owner of the restaurant, has been an employee of the Pig Stand for over 40 years, formerly working as a waitress back in 1967. I was able to meet her during my last visit and she really is the nicest woman you’ll ever meet, and she could easily be considered the heart of the business.
Others that work there truly put their soul in the food they cook and it definitely reflects in it based on just how delicious everything it is. If you’re living in the San Antonio area at local residences--Latitude Apartments or Terrain at Medical Center, for example--I recommend stopping off to visit and grabbing a great meal. The place may be old but customers are what keeps it going strong. And with the recent pandemic impacting small businesses and restaurants, The Pig Stand is more than worthy of some love from the San Antonio community.
If you’re curious about the history of the restaurant, you can visit their main website HERE. If you never listen to a thing I have to say ever again, at least listen to this much--The Pig Stand is nothing short of spectacular and you HAVE to go. Stop by for a visit and enjoy a slice of true home-cooked San Antonio pride!
